Angliers Dam Ornithological Site
Angliers Dam Ornithological Site
Angliers, Témiscamingue
Abitibi-Témiscamingue offers a wide variety of habitats, which promotes a beautiful diversity of birdlife. The Sharp-tailed Grouse, the Gray Warbler, and large gatherings of Sandhill Cranes are ornithological features of the region that delight birdwatchers. Certain easily accessible sites represent areas of interest and host bird species that the Société du loisir ornithologique de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue (SLOAT) wishes to disseminate to the public.
The site :
A large dam harnesses the Ottawa River at Angliers, recently named Laverlochère-Angliers. Downstream of this structure, the turbulent waters attract several species of waterfowl. In winter, when elsewhere the lakes are frozen, the Common Goldeneye and the Common Merganser dive freely while the Bald Eagle occasionally prowls. From April to October, the Herring Gull and the Ring-billed Gull, as well as the Double-crested Cormorant and the Common Loon, enjoy the fish-filled waters. Bonaparte's Gulls are sometimes observed here. Ospreys also scan the river for fish from the air. Tree Swallows, Barn Swallows, and Cliff Swallows nest in the area. Bank Swallows are less common. The surrounding forests provide a wealth of passerines, including about twenty species of warblers. The best observation points are the municipal park, the campground, and Rue des Draveurs, which runs along the river. The area upstream of the dam is also worth a stop for observation. The total of 155 species reported for this site is certainly an underestimate. This place is worth visiting year-round! Visit the website of the SLOAT to find out about upcoming activities.
