Harricana River Rapids Ornithological Site
Amos, Amos Région
Abitibi-Témiscamingue offers a wide variety of habitats, which promotes a beautiful diversity of birdlife. The Sharp-tailed Grouse, the Gray Warbler, and large gatherings of Sandhill Cranes are ornithological features of the region that delight birdwatchers. Certain easily accessible sites represent areas of interest and host bird species that the Société du loisir ornithologique de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue (SLOAT) wishes to disseminate to the public.

The Harricana River crosses the town of Amos and flows north, emptying some 500 km further into James Bay! Located on the east shore, Brunet Park and Agora Nature Park offer pleasant walks. The Ulrick Chérubin footbridge overlooks the waterway and offers a good view of it. This is an ideal spot for observing Tree Swallows, Barn Swallows, and Cliff Swallows feeding, as well as Ring-billed Gulls and Herring Gulls. Bonaparte's Gulls stop here in the spring on their way to their more northern nesting grounds. The Spotted Sandpiper feeds discreetly in the nooks and crannies of the banks where Mallards, American Black Ducks, and other waterfowl can also hide. In winter, the rapids do not freeze, which attracts the Common Goldeneye and occasionally allows you to see rare species in the region. The King Eider, the Harlequin Duck, the Barrow's Goldeneye, and the Red-throated Diver have already stopped there. In spring, a visit to the Paré marina, located about 2 km upstream, can be interesting. The river overflows and floods the lower lands in this area, which then become ideal for observing waders.
