Natural Environment
Geography
Formed in a fracture of the earth’s crust, Vaudray and Joannès lakes are both generally oriented north-south. These two lakes with sandy bottoms are distinguished from the other lakes in the Abitibia region, which are often made up of clay beds, by their greater depth and higher transparency
Wildlife
The Biodiversity Reserve is home to a large number of mammals including the American porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum), red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus), Canadian beaver (Castor canadensis), Great Polatouche (Glaucomys sabrinus), muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus), Northern Moose (Alces alces), American Hare (Lepus americanus), Long-tailed Weasel (Mustela frenata), Common Ermine (Mustela erminea), American Marten (Martes americana), Pekan (Martes pennanti), American Mink (Mustela vison), Striped Skunk (Mephitis mephitis), Lontra canadensis, Black Bear (Ursus americanus), Grey Wolf (Canis lupus), Coyote (Canis latrans), Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) and Canada Lynx (Lynx canadensis). There are also 118 species of birds, 98 of which nest here. Among the nesting species are: black duck (Anas rubripes), winter teal (Anas crecca), great harle (Mergus merganser), collared duck (Aythya collaris) and golden eye garrote (Bucephala clangula). In the deciduous forests, we find the around the dove (Accipiter gentilis) and the great woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus). The Brown Warbler (Certhia americana) is also found in coniferous forests. Lake Joannes is frequented by 14 species of fish and Lake Vaudray by only 8 species.
Flora
The forest consists mainly of coniferous stands on the heights or mixed clusters on the slopes. Black spruce is the dominant species. It is most often accompanied by white spruce, balsam fir, paper birch and aspen aspen.
